Our place in the science sector
The Ministry for Research, Science and Technology (MoRST) is responsible for managing the Government's investment in research, science and technology (called Vote RS&T).
The Foundation? is the largest public sector investment agent for Vote RS&T, nearly $500 million per annum, investing three-quarters of the money allocated by the Government to RS&T.
The other two main investment agents are:
- Health Research Council of New Zealand, which funds a large proportion of New Zealand’s health research
- Royal Society of New Zealand, which manages the Marsden Fund for supporting investigator - driven research, and also runs a range of science promotion activities.
Between us, we manage a mix of investments in RS&T for the benefit of New Zealand.
Other agents that support the RS&T sector
There are a number of other organisations that support research, science and technology in New Zealand.
They include:
- New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE), which offers business development and develops strategies for industry sectors
- The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), which administers the Bright Future Scholarship Scheme to support people to conduct research
- Fulbright New Zealand, which administers study and research awards to promote educational and cultural exchange between New Zealand and the United States.
